Yemaya (1998)

The Mother of the Orishas, the Queen of the Seas. She is the natural protector of all children as well as the secrets of the oceans.

In this image Yemaya (also spelled Yemaja and Yemanja) is enthroned and welcoming, with waters flowing at her feet, which are placed on the continent of Africa.

The green egg at her belt and the sprouting plants at the waters’ edges betoken the promise and the reality of green life. As the seas dance to the pull of the Moon, the lunar cycle crowns her, including an eclipse.

The spermlike drops on either side refer to “water from the Moon”– something rare and precious.
